“Ready.”
We stood in front of the box. The one that was supposed to hold blue balloons.
“One, two three ” we said together.
We lifted the lid.
Silence followed.
Not the joyful kind. The heavy kind that settles when something is wrong.
Inside the box were printed boards. Clear images. Messages. Photos that told the truth better than any words could.
I heard someone gasp behind me.
Blake’s hand dropped from my shoulder. Harper froze where she stood.
No one needed an explanation. I gave one anyway.
“This was supposed to reveal my babys gender ” I said calmly. “. I found out something more important two days ago.”
My voice didn’t shake. That surprised me.
“My husband and my sister have been having an affair.”
The words hung in the air.
Blake tried to speak. Nothing came out. Harper’s eyes filled with tears, but she couldn’t deny what everyone could clearly see.
There were whispers among the guests. Shock, disbelief, anger.
My father stepped forward, his face tense. My mother covered her mouth, unable to process what was happening.
Blake finally found his voice. It sounded weak.
“We can talk about this privately ” he said.
I shook my head.
“You weren’t private about it ” I replied.
Harper tried to apologize. Her words fell apart before they formed. There was nothing she could say that would undo what she had done.
One by one, people began to step. Some left quietly. Others stayed, trying to understand how something like this could happen.
Blake’s family didn’t stay long. The disappointment on their faces said enough. My own family stood by me even as they struggled to accept what Harper had done.
Eventually, Blake left. Harper followed not after.
The party ended without celebration.
